My granddaughter, Alicia just had her first birthday. And specifically we had one cupcake set aside with frosting and sprinkles on the top just for her. For a while Alicia played with the cupcake, squishing it, smearing it all over the table, putting it on her face, putting it in her hair; laughing the whole time. She never once tasted the cupcake but she delighted in it.

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder.  But absence can make teamwork take longer.  For many reasons, more and more teams have members who are separated by time and space: remote locations; telecommuting; busy travel schedules; acquisitions; or global projects.  Dispersed teams have all the challenges facing a team with everyone in one place (co-located), plus other potential barriers such as time zones, cultural differences, and feelings of social isolation.
